This beautiful Majolica vase was made between 1881 and 1934 by the Josef Strnact company of Bohemian, Austria, which in 1938 became part of Germany. It is often found as a set of two with a mantel clock to match. Obviously there were many mantels in most homes, therefore mantel decor was popular to sell to the families of means. Some of the very best and most beautiful decorative china and porcelain originated in this part of Europe. However, like many painted Majolica pieces, before the turn of the century, the painting is visibly patchy in depth, due to poorly lite factories where women and children applied the paint to ceramics. This vase has a transfer design of two happy ladies with a garden rake and basket of fresh flowers. One is dressed very fancy as the 1880s Lady of the house, the second lady appears to be her your hand maiden who assisted her in daily tasks. The design is framed in a gold border with gold filigree decoration above and below the inset. The decoration does not go around the vase, as it would be sitting on a mantel. Bohemian, Austria, Germany.
The vase is 8" tall and very charming.
