This lovely carving depicts Shoulao, the God of Longevity and his companion deer, which is also an emblem of longevity. Shoulao is depicted holding a peach, which is commonly seen on carvings of him. The carving is done in soapstone of a tan and dark chocolate color and is very nicely detailed. It was most likely carved in China in the early part of the 1900s and may have been brought to the United States by an immigrant. Like so many items from the past, if it could talk, what an interesting story it would tell.
