This lovely Yellowware bowl is a beautiful size. It is most likely from the early 1830s to 1845 period, if made in the US. It has all the classic signs of early Yellowware, hand thrown, no foot (does have a ridged bottom to avoid moisture buildup), no rim, no markings. Yellowware was first produced in Scotland and England and imported to America, but in 1830, the yellow clay deposits of Ohio, New Jersey, Maryland, and North Carolina attracted potters and the American potteries began producing Yellowware to be the utilitarian workhorse pottery in every kitchen. This large, simple bowl is a really RARE find. It has a hairline crack (which the former owner told me was there 60 years ago when she found it). This bowl would be lovely holding seasonal fruit or veggies on the counter, or could tilt and rest on an edge and be a backdrop for other kitchen items.
It weighs 4 lbs 5 oz and measures 14" across at the top, 9" at the base and is 4" deep
