Large Japanese Cobalt Satsuma Kinkozam Vase with an elegant flared body supporting Elephant handles and tassels at the shoulders. The cobalt base color finished with Kenran-de (Gold Paint) on decorative floral relief was common from 1910 to 1920, the latter part of the Meiji period (1645-1927) . The design, plus the Cobalt and gilt link this Satsuma piece to Kinkozam artists. The Flowers look like Cherry Blossoms, while the leaves are Peony shaped and exaggerated towards the bottom of the vase. The branches are sectioned like bamboo. A rather interpretative artist. The vase is beautiful and in wonderful condition. It has a mark on the bottom. There is only one very small hairline crack in the base area. The story given when the vase came to me was interesting. Apparently, this vase was handed down within a family after being given as a Wedding gift to the great grandmother. The family story was...the vase came from a U.S. Senator's wife, who gifted it to her young maid who was leaving and moving West with her new husband. The signature or company mark is on the base. There is not an import stamp, which would make sense, if the Senator was gifted the vase, while visiting in Japan. The current family members could not remember the Senator's name, only that he represented an Eastern state. Sorry, I cannot prove this story, but the family members were all in agreement about this information.
