The Johann Haviland company first opened in 1855 in Limoges, France under the name Haviland and Co. Original founder, David Haviland, passed the ownership of the company down the family for several generations. In the early 1900s the company split and David's grandson, John Haviland, moved his company to Germany and renamed it Johann Haviland. The Haviland name remained in the company through both World Wars. After World War II, the company marketed towards America and gained popularity there.
