If you are interested in medical history, this little relic might be a great addition to your curio cabinet. It is a Dr. Miles Restorative Nervine Medicine Bottle. This elixir bottle is clear aqua glass, and has a rectangular body with embossed lettering. The bottle is in good condition, but has signs of under water aging. The glass is cloudy, and has some accumulated residues (see photos).

The dimensions of the bottle are as follows: L: 2.75", H: 8", W: 1.5", lip diameter: 1".

Nervine was a elixir designed to treat a catch-all amount of conditions including anxiety, headaches, epilepsy, and spasms. It was even said to "cure" now out-dated disorders such as hysteria, thus, largely aimed at a female market. Nervine potions were most commonly used around the 1890s and into the 1900s. In 1938, with the establishment of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) this had to change. The Dr. Miles brand made a lot of their profits by obscuring ingredient information from the public in order to sell their quackery tonics -- now, they had to quickly change their name and method. The new "Miles Laboratories" they created lasted until it was purchased by Bayer in the late '70s, and then went entirely defunct in 1995.
